The first of four songs written directly after Return To Pop Island, “Hand-Brake Turns” is a mid-tempo RnB track about persevering through the hard times that might come your way.
With its shuffling drums, “Hand-Brake Turns” finds WAC putting their own spin on the boom-bap sound, using contemporary synth production and vocal processing to give the song a modern feel.
Lyrically, the track is full of quotables and one-liners, showing WAC’s growth as a lyricist too.
The song’s title comes from a mission in GTA San Andreas and served as the catalyst for the rest of the track, with WAC choosing the name first for no reason other than “the phrase sounded cool”.
Overall, “Hand-Brake Turns” offers a new sonic environment for WAC while paying homage to the 90s rnb and rap that was such a strong part of WAC’s musical childhood. Taking this 90s theme a step further, the single also includes an instrumental and a capella version- why don’t people do that anymore?
